Friday Fun

Published December 20, 2013

This Friday’s funnies are a mixed bag — We LOVE this photo (which captures the occasional reality of the season): From www.jamiliajean.com, via stuffchristianslike.net And, we admit, there are days that go like this (both for the pastor and the dog)! From http://www.dogshaming.com, via stuffchrisitanslike.net And, if that’s not enough, read “Hilarious Church Bulletin Bloopers” from the National Catholic Register at http://bit.ly/J7RgTL An example: “The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon.”

Called to be Troublemakers

Published December 18, 2013

As I am writing this article, the Memorial service for Nelson Mandela is on the news. I had just finished reading a story in an Advent devotional book and I was struck by another one of those “funny coincidences” that happen in our lives! The article was entitled, “Troublemakers.” In the article a man wrote about living in New York and how he, his wife and youngest son had heard from Bishop Peter and Elizabeth Storey who were in town for a bishops’ conference. Bishop Storey had formerly been the family’s pastor in Nashville. The family invited the Storeys and […]

The Story

Published December 17, 2013

Beginning in January of 2014 at DeLeon First United Methodist Church, the congregation will be using The Story to create a full congregational experience of Bible study. Condensed into 31 accessible chapters, The Story provides the unfolding progression of Bible characters and events from Genesis to Revelation. Using clear, accessible text of the New International Version Bible, it allows the stories, poems, and teachings of the Bible to read like a novel. And like any good story, The Story is filled with intrigue, drama, conflict, romance, and redemption! The Story includes selections from the NIV Bible with short transitions to connect […]

A Real Christmas Gift

Published December 14, 2013

Gussie Dowell was a long-time piano teacher in DeLeon. Near the end of her life, she was a resident of a nursing home in DeLeon. Becky Timmons worked at the nursing home in those days. “Before Christmas of 1996,” Timmons said, “I asked her what she wanted for Christmas.” Gussie, who was blind, said, “What I want, you can’t give me.” Timmons insisted, and Gussie finally told her that she would like to hear Byron Smith and Sharon Fraiser, two of her favorite piano students, play the piano one more time. Timmons made some calls. “I got Gussie out of […]

Doesn’t it sometimes seem like Christians need their own dictionary to explain those terms you only hear in church, or that are used differently in church than they are used anywhere else in the world? Well, Tim Stewart thought so: Check out the Dictionary of Christianese at http://www.dictionaryofchristianese.com/

Understanding Advent

Published December 9, 2013

by Dean McIntyre When. Advent marks the beginning of the church year. It begins with the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day. In 2013, Christmas falls on a Wednesday, and Christmas Eve on Tuesday night. Thus, in 2013 Advent begins Sunday, December 1, and ends the morning of Tuesday, December 24 three weeks plus a portion of an additional day. What. Advent comes from the Latin word, adventus, meaning “coming.” It is a season to prepare for the coming of Christ in various meanings: the promised coming of the Messiah to the Jews, the coming of Jesus being born in Bethlehem, […]

Friday Fun

Published December 6, 2013

If you haven’t read Jon Acuff’s blog “Stuff Christians Like,” you’re missing out. Acuff pokes (mostly) gentle fun at Christian foibles. However, our choice today is a sort of warped mash-up of a beer commercial and Jesus — trust us, it’s okay. Wishing someone would do a Dos Equis beer style commercial about Jesus. This is exactly the post you expected to find today on Stuff Christians Like. I bet you thought, “You know what? I imagine Jon is going to compare a Latin beer commercial to Jesus one of these days.” And today my friend, is indeed that day. […]
