Dear Parents – Part Two

Published October 29, 2013

Dear Parents With Young Children in Church PART II by Jamie Bruesehoff (Recently, two pastor friends brought this article from Huffington Post to my attention. This is part II.) I know how hard it is to do what you’re doing, but I want you to know it matters. It matters to me. It matters to my children to not be alone in the pew. It matters to the congregation to know that families care about faith, to see young people . . . and even on those weeks when you can’t see the little moments, it matters to your children. It matters that they learn […]

Funds raised by the festival go to support the church’s local outreach programs, like the Jump Start after school program at the church. This program provides a safe and supervised after school environment for around 35 elementary-age children until their parents can pick them up after the parents get off work. The children are provided with snacks and given help with homework by paid staff and volunteers from the church. The Harvest Festival gets underway at […]

Paul Thorn — Good in Everyone

Published October 28, 2013

Paul Thorn is a singer-songwriter whose style is a mix of blues and rock. The Tupelo, Mississippi native worked in a furniture factory, jumped out of airplanes, and was a professional boxer before sharing his experiences with the world as a singer-songwriter. His father is a Church of God Pentecostal Minister, and while Paul’s theological views may not exactly match his father’s, Paul is not shy about telling folks at his shows and in his songs what he believes about the Gospel of Christ. In this YouTube clip, Paul talks about the inspiration (“. . . to me, that’s what […]

Maybe you saw the posting on our Facebook page where Tracy Coan had become aware of a need for some help for a 3-year-old and her mother. “There is a three year old little girl in the community who needs winter clothes and shoes . . .,” Tracy said, going on to add that Mom “wasn’t worried about her needs, just her daughter’s.” “Mom is working but her hours have been drastically cut lately, making it very difficult to make ends meet,” Tracy said. “She has other assistance in place to help with food and utilities at the moment. Please […]

The Pluralism Question

Published October 23, 2013

The Discipleship Class at FUMC has been working our way through Brian McLaren’s book A New Kind of Christianity, dealing with questions it raises. The current question is titled the Pluralism Question, ie., “How do followers of Jesus relate to people of other faiths?” Other questions raised by this include: Why do you feel the question of religious pluralism is so important, and how do you rank the dangers of the two common responses (“It’s either us or them” and “Whatever you believe is fine”) described by the author? The author reviews several passages of Scripture that could be brought to […]

Dear Parents with Young Children in Church

Published October 22, 2013

by Jamie Bruesehoff (Recently, two pastor friends brought this article from Huffington Post to my attention. I will be including it in this Newsletter and the second installment will be in the following Newsletter. —  PJ) “You are doing something really, really important. I know it’s not easy. I see you with your arms overflowing, and I know you came to church already tired. Parenting is tiring. Really tiring. “I watch you bounce and sway trying to keep the baby quiet, juggling the infant car seat and the diaper bag as you find a seat. I see you wince as […]
