“It Takes All Kinds”

“It Takes All Kinds”

We have heard that a lot in our lives haven’t we?

“It takes all kinds of people to make a world.” I believe this to be true. I also believe that we as the church, and in particular the United Methodist Church, are called to serve all kinds.

Jesus commissioned the first disciples and us as well to go and make disciples of all nations, and then to teach these folks to obey everything that Jesus has commanded of us.

He then assured us that he will be with us every day until the end of this present age.

To me that means that he will walk beside us as we minister to those who are seeking more in their lives. And then, like so many of the teachings of Jesus, I believe he wants us to carry it further, he wants us to walk beside those whom we encounter that are struggling with faith, with God, with life.

It was the way of Jesus to minister to the oppressed, the outcast, the sinner. He taught us to remove the logs from our eyes and to put down those first stones. He continued God’s teaching of offering second chances and he taught it to us as forgiveness and demonstrated it by forgiving a man on the cross next to him and even those who nailed him to his.

It does me well to be reminded of this story from time to time:
One day a man walked into a church seriously considering converting to Christianity. But when he got inside, the usher refused to let him sit and suggested that he go worship with his own people…and so he did.

That man was Mahatma Gandhi.

Lord, not only my feet but also my hands and head!

Love y’all,
John
